Okay, let's get one thing straight. I didn't write this book to de-convert anyone. Honest. So, if you're a devout Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Mormon, Catholic, Scientologist, or whatever, you just keep on doing what you're doing. No offense, but, as long as you're a good person who doesn't try to shove your beliefs down my throat or protest at military funerals, I really couldn't give a rodent's rectum about your spirituality. It's none of my business. Go to church. Don't eat pork. Worship Ganesh. Pray your rosary. Jump on couches and pretend you're on Oprah? Whatever. If it keeps you from going on a multi-state killing spree armed with grenades and an Uzi, knock yourself out! For your information, I wrote this book, well, for your information. That's it. Over the years I've been asked more and more how I went from being a Catholic to a teen atheist to a rabid Bible thumper (with a mullet!) to a (somewhat) mild-mannered atheist and I've always said, "It's a really long story. I'll write a book about it someday. I promise". Now, after repeating this oath a bazillion or two times, frankly, I'm tired of stalling. So, instead of procrastinating more or becoming rude to (mostly) well-meaning folks who are just curious, here you go. I done wrote a book about it. So if this book offends you, don't launch a campaign to re-convert me. Don't carpet bomb me with hellfire and brimstone emails. If you're really pissed off, I'm so nice I'll give you a list of names and home addresses of all the people who've pestered me for the story contained in this audiobook. So go bother them! It's their fault this book exists, not mine! Incidentally, if you feel so inclined, you can pray for me. That's cool. Whatever lights your altar candles, partner. That's none of my business either.

This is an amazing story that describes what it is like growing up religious and in a religious family and the dissonance that comes from trying to rationalize those beliefs with reality. This is the journey of a great man to find out who he is, what he believes, and what is important to him; all done in hilarious and unapologetic fashion too! Seriously, read it.Product details

Rebirth Defect My Journey from Catholic Altar Boy to Teen Atheist to Adult Christian Metal Evangelist and Back to Atheism (Audible Audio Edition) Stephen Hines ALB Books Books Reviews
Finished this book in one setting and I can say with all honesty I get it I understand were he is coming from even though I don't share his views and am a believer. I don't go to church my church is in my home with my own personal quite time and with friends whom I have bible study with. I have experienced my own apostasy in the past and returned to my faith because my convictions wouldn't let me walk away. In some ways I admire those who can. Who can just let it go and never look back but I know what Christ has done for me even though I don't have all the answers I just live by faith even though that will be laughed at criticized and disrespected by the atheist that's fine though. As their (sic) faith is so be it into them. I love the authors honesty and his bluntness that to me is respectable. His life story is so engaging and I hope the Christian that reads this does in a none judgemental way. We are not called to kick the Lord Jesus off his throne and sit in judgement we are to love and I have nothing but respect for this author and God bless him and bring him back someday
As an avid reader, I've read many books over the years but none like this. This book carried me through so many emotions, and I appreciate the raw style of Stephen's writing. In a world where everyone tries so hard to be PC, it's rare to read something so real. Whether you agree with his thoughts and beliefs or not, this book makes you think about where you are in your own journey. The truth that he portrays so well is that it doesn't matter if you believe in God or not, it's about how you live your life and treat others. His blunt representation of mental illness hit home for me and emphasizes the importance of increased awareness and treatment for those suffering. Mental illness knows no boundaries and affects people from all backgrounds. I am so glad that despite the struggles and ignorance that he faced, that Stephen came out in a better place. I am especially thankful that he decided to share his life with the rest of us.
Best book I've ever read. If you have a sense of humor read this book.
Hines takes the reader on a journey from the experiences of religion through the eyes of a child to the rebellion of a teenager to the indoctrination of a young adult in a Christian metal band to the awakening of a man who doesn't know all the answers but knows enough to question everything. His autobiographical narrative is funny, honest, and introspective, reminiscent of Dave Barry.
Hine's memoir of his journey from believer to non-believer to over the top believer to non-believer, is as insightful as it is irreverent and convoluted. Rebirth Defect also answered all the questions I never knew I had about being in a Christian Heavy Metal Band. I'd recommend this book both to SOLDIERS OF JESUS CHRIST!!!! and born again heathens.
Finished reading this wonderful book last night, and I can't say enough good things about it. Coming from someone who has personally seen the world through the eyes of a believer and a non-believer, I can say that Hines' memoir is super easy to relate to, while also being wildly entertaining to keep your interest piqued through all stages of his back and forth transitioning. After being on multiple sides of the religious (and lack thereof) spectrum, Hines is able to give a lot of solid, respectable insight on religious beliefs. Not only will it have you laughing aloud (you have been warned if you intend to read it in public places!), but he also brings up some very thought provoking points to get your gears turning, and provides some very real advice on life. Great read for anybody, regardless of your backgrounds or beliefs.
I just finished reading about the writer's journey. The book is very entertaining! It keeps you engaged and wanting to know what is next. I laughed a lot. Very entertaining!
